Nerd Nite + Photography Exhibition

This month’s Nerd Nite is a special symbiotic edition. What is more symbiotic than bees and flowers? Maybe a group of curious-minded individuals coming together to share their knowledge!

Talk #1 “Frankenflower: Reprogramming Plants” with Otho Mantegazza
Genes encode instructions on how to build an organism and the “software” to run it. From mutations to genome modification we are slowly learning to rewrite these instructions. Otho is going to show you how with examples from the world of plants and flowers.

Otho is a PhD student in molecular biology and studies how flowers are built. He’s interested in anything that is scientific and technological, he loves the sea, and listens to a lot of electronic music.

Talk #2 “art photography and bees sex” with Renee Ricciardi
Renee is an art photogapher and beekeeper on her second tour of Italy to photograph and experience beekeeping in Italy. Come to hear about the ins and outs of beekeeping, to see her artwork, and to learn what Italy is doing to combat the worldwide problem of beehive collapse.

Talk 1: There are more things in [Google Ngram] Than Are Dreamt of in your Philosophy

What if you could analyze every word every book in every library, bookcase, and attic around the world? What kind of trends and changes in culture could you discover? All of the world’s books constitute an immense ‘‘crowd-sourced’’ historical record that traces the evolution of culture beyond the limits of oral history. But to analyze individual words over time has been incredibly painstaking– until now. Google has digitzed a huge collection of written language in the form of the Google Books Ngram Viewer web application (https://books.google.com/ngrams). 4% of all books ever published have been digitally scanned, making 10 million histories for individual words, a vast archive of cultural dynamics over more than two centuries. With statistical methods borrowed from physics, we show what the frequencies of words can tell us about every aspect of society, from the recent emergence of the environmentalism to the impact of feminism on human sexual behavior over the last 200+ years, from the the impact of globalization on vocabularies in 7 languages, to the role of spell-checkers on the survival rate of “mutant” words.

Talk 2: Roth e Io

E’ inoltre ideatore e animatore di show letterari dedicati in particolare agli scrittori americani.
